The Governor of South Carolina advises to limit public gatherings to 50 guests or less to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC carefully considered this recommendation and ask that additional guest please participate via live-streaming if it is authorized by the family.

A Private Funeral Service for Mrs. Bertie Mae Echols will be conducted 1:00 PM Thursday, July 23, 2020 at J. O. & Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, 307 South Johns Street, Florence, South Carolina, directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.

Mrs. Bertie Mae Echols, the daughter of the late Samuel Mack and Rhoda B. Mack was born in Florence County on Oct. 14, 1942. She departed this life on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

She attended the Public Schools of Florence County.

Mrs. Echols was a member of Majority Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend O. E. Jackson, and then later joined Savannah Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Ralph Canty, where she faithfully and passionately taught Sunday School.

She was homemaker and loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly.

Mrs. Echols entered holy matrimony with the late George W. Echols, which preceded her in death, on April 20, 1965. To this union seven children were born.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Mack and Rhoda B. Mack; two children, Barbara Echols and Tracey Echols McIver; and five siblings, John Mack, Samuel Mack, Jr, John Henry Mack, Moses Mack and Gracie Lee.

Mrs. Echols leaves to mourn her passing: five children, Veronica (Leon) Thomas of Griffin, Georgia, Mark Echols of Raleigh, North Carolina, Rajah Echols of the home, Jonathan (Adriene) Echols of Raleigh, North Carolina, Samantha (George, Jr.) Moses of Raleigh, North Carolina; 16 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother, James (Bertha) Mack of Florence, South Carolina; four sisters-in-law, Ruth (Al) Henderson of Elgin, Illinois, Margie Williams of Chicago, Illinois, Carolyn Shannon and Bessie Burgess both of Florence, South Carolina; a host of nieces and nephews; and two longtime friends, Joyce Marshall and Margaret James both of Florence, South Carolina.
