“Yea, through I walk through the Valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4
Mr. Curtis S. Godwin, Jr. came into our home approximately fourteen years ago and became a tenant of 457 East Pine Street, Florence, South Carolina 29506, the home of Mr. Neil and Reverend Elma Galbreath.
Birthday: July 31, 1944
Mr. Curtis starting : Birthplace: Baltimore, Maryland
Sisters: Sharall Godwin of Fairfax, Virginia
Mr. Curtis was a truck driver that traveled thru many states and Florence, South Carolina was one of the places he had frequently stopped and he enjoyed being in Florence. Upon retiring he decided Florence would be his retirement Place. After living in hotels rooms for a while Curtis said an angel sent him to this home 457 East Pine Street, where he resided until his death February 21, 2023 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina.
Curtis became a part of Mr. Neil and Reverend Elma’s family and enjoyed Holidays and Family Reunions along with whatever was going on here. He was able to get along with everyone coming and going in 457.
My children all called him Mr. Curt and he helped so many people out: driving them in his little red car to different places. ( I don’t know where they sat because he had sooo much junk in the car).
Mr. Curtis was such a kind -good person loving to read – read and listen to his radio and television. He was such a help when Mr. Neil was ill and his job was to take the garbage bin to the road on Monday and he did just that. The last few months upon his illness and I knew it was hard for him, but he still tried stating “that’s my job” .
Mr. Curtis never changed the fact that an “Angel” sent him to 457 East Pine Street and last month at home, he talked of Angels in his room, in the hallway and by his side, stating that one of the Angels looked just like “Andre”, my son that was killed in 1998, whom Curtis had never seen.
457 and this family will miss “Mr. Curtis”. Curtis last words to me in the hospital were “When I leave here I want to go back home, because I don’t want to break up the Family Unit.”
