Deacon Edward Lee Barr
Journey Begins February 4, 1938
Deacon Edward Lee Barr was born on February 4, 1938, to the late George W. Barr, Sr. and the late Julia Barr in Hemingway, South Carolina. Affectionately known as Eddie, he is the 2nd eldest of ten children. He was educated in the public schools of Hemingway. While in high school, not only did he excel as a student athlete, but Deacon Edward was also employed as a school bus driver. He graduated from Chavis High School in 1958. After high school, he obtained an associate degree from Demark Technical College in Denmark, South Carolina an HBCU in 1960. Amongst his many achievements, Deacon Edward graduated from the New York City Police Academy. He became gainfully employed by the New York City Police Department for 32 years and he retired from One Police Plaza as an Administrator operating the NCIC Computer in 2000. During his tenure, Deacon Edward had many accolades: citations and awards for Perfect Attendance, Diligent Service and Best Patrolman of the Year.
SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
At an early age, Deacon Edward accepted Jesus as his Savior while at his childhood family church, Jeremiah United Methodist Church in Hemingway, South Carolina. When he migrated to New York City, he became a member of Salton Baptist Church in Manhattan, New York City for several years. Until he became a co-founding member of Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey. On May 6, 1979, Deacon Edward was ordained as a Deacon, where he served on the Male Chorus, Deacon Alliance Platform and Sick Ministry. After many years of service at Little Rock he was called to serve at Saint Mathews Baptist in Roselle, New Jersey, where he continued his ministries. In his golden years, Deacon Edward relocated to Florence, South Carolina. He joined New Ebenezer Baptist Church on July 24, 2005, and was installed as a Deacon on September 21, 2008, under Reverend Dr. Norman Gamble. Deacon Edward was active in serval ministries: Sick & Shut In, Male Chorus, Scott Singers, Golden Age Praise Dance, Sunday School, Bible Study, Prison Ministry, and Feeding the Homeless. New Ebenezer honored Deacon Edward with 14 years of Faithful Service on September 25, 2022. New Ebenezer remained his church home until he was called home on September 2, 2023.
Family
In 1961, Deacon Edward married his kindergarten sweetheart, Annette Morris Barr. This union was blessed with four girls: Wanda, Claire, Eddrena, and Elonia and guardianship of two sons: Anthony and Herbert Jr. He was a loving, devoted husband and father, known to be very involved with his children and the community. His nephews, children and grandsons challenged him to basketball and Chess, but he was always victorious. After 39 years of marriage, his beloved Annette was called home in 2000. Deacon Edward was able to find love again in 2006 with his fiancée, Legretta Harlee.

Sister: Sally Scott; Brothers: Herbert (Chris) Barr, Sr, James (Juanita) Barr and Benjamin “Lendy” Barr; Sisters-in-law: Earline Pressley, Ora Lee Wright, Alberta Gibson and Shirley (Lawrence) Nelson; Brother-in-law: Shirley “Freddie” King; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
