In Loving Memory of Leila Hines

With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Leila Hines, on the morning of January 5, 2025.

Leila was born to the late Harry Phillips and Beatrice Waring Phillips and was one of nine children raised in a home filled with love, faith, and strong family values. She was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished husband Mack Hines, her beloved son Michael Hines, four brothers—Frank Phillips, Isaac Phillips, Johnny Phillips, and Henry Phillips—and two sisters, Hattie Mae Thomas and Rebecca Phillips.

Leila is survived by her two devoted daughters, Gabriella Hines and Sandra Hines-Gill; four treasured grandchildren: Ebony, Cornell, Shannon, and a great-grandchild who held a special place in her heart; and four adored great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy. She is also survived by her two loving sisters: Maime Phillips of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and her twin sister Lillie Grant of Florence, SC. Her extended family includes five caring sisters-in-law: Delores Phillips, Margie Hines, and Susanna Hines of Florence, SC; Mary Aikens of Brooklyn, New York; and Martha Spears of Philadelphia, PA, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will deeply miss her kind and nurturing spirit.

Leila’s life was deeply rooted in her faith. On November 2, 1975, she made the life-changing decision to dedicate herself to Jehovah God through baptism, a choice that brought her peace and purpose. Her unwavering hope in the promise of a paradise earth motivated her to share the Bible’s message, providing comfort and inspiration to many.

A woman of many talents, Leila was an accomplished seamstress whose hands created beauty and love with every stitch. From designing wedding gowns for her daughters to crafting elegant men’s suits and special garments for friends and family, her work reflected her creativity and care.

Her warmth also extended into her kitchen, where she prepared meals that nourished both body and soul. Sunday dinners at Leila’s home were more than just a meal—they were an expression of love and a time when family and friends traveled miles for her delicious food and heartfelt company. Dishes like her famous three-layer chocolate cake, tender turnip greens, Sandra’s favorite cornmeal dumplings, and Gabriella’s beloved potato salad brought everyone together around her table. These gatherings became treasured traditions filled with laughter, warmth, and unforgettable memories.

Though she faced her share of challenges, Leila’s love for her family never wavered. She was a devoted mother, a guiding light to her grandchildren, and an ever-present source of wisdom and encouragement to her great-grandchildren. Her legacy of love, kindness, and strength will forever live on in the hearts of those she held dear.

A memorial service celebrating Leila’s remarkable life will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2025. The family invites all who knew and loved her to join in honoring her memory and reflecting on the beautiful life she lived.

Leila Hines will always be remembered as a woman of faith, compassion, and grace, whose legacy of love and creativity continues to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
