Funeral service for Mother Millie McMillian will be conducted 11:00 AM Friday, November 15, 2019 at Savannah Grove Baptist Church, 2620 Alligator Rd., Effingham. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens, directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.
Mother Millie McMillian was born October 19, 1927 in Florence County. She was the daughter of the late John Henry McMillian and Mamie Milo McMillian. She departed this life Friday evening, November 8, 2019 at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Mother McMillian received her formal education in the Public Schools of Florence, South Carolina. “Mama” as she was affectionately called enjoyed spending time with her family; watching her favorite television show, Walker Texas Ranger; cooking Sunday Dinners; working in her puzzle books; listening to her favorite performer, Michael Jackson, but most of all reading the word of God.
At an early age, Mother McMillian was converted, joined, and baptized at Saint Beulah Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina. She was a founding member of Majority Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. O. E. Jackson. Years later, she was one of four who found and established Open Door Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. B. F. Alston. She served on the Pastor’s Aide Organization; Deaconesses Board; and sang on the Gospel Choir. She also served as the Mother of Open Door Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents; Mother McMillian was preceded in death by her only sibling, Sadie McMillian Robinson; a niece, Jackie Robinson; an uncle, Zola McMillian; and two aunts, Willie McMillian and Catherine McMillian Parrott.
Mother McMillian leaves to cherish her loving and precious memories: three children, William (Helen) McMillian, Mary McMillian, and Robert (Mary) McMillian all of Florence, South Carolina; nine grandchildren, Cher Harvey and Natashia (Andy) Heggins both of Baltimore, Maryland, Shauntai McMillian of Atlanta, Georgia, Anastacia (Jarvis) Simon, Tifani (Apostle Jeremiah) Merritt, Nicholas McMillian, Justin McMillian, Millicent (Markee) Hamlin and Keri Peterson all of Florence, South Carolina; fifteen great-grandchildren, which includes two great-grandchildren known as her Heartstrings, Khali Mayo and Wynston McMillian; two great great-grandchildren; one special niece, Catherine Wilson; and a host of other relatives; extended church family; and friends.
The family will receive friends 3PM – 8PM at 270 Quinby Circle, Quinby.
