Mr. Lloyd Smith, Jr.

Funeral service for Mr. Lloyd Lorenz “Smitty” Smith Jr. will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Mount Zion AME Church, 1305 E. Cheves St., Florence. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC. Lloyd affectionately called “Smitty” was born August 15, 1941 at Smith Hospital, 423 Charles St., in Florence, SC to the late Lloyd L. Smith Sr. and Alva Alexine Austin Smith. He died on Tuesday, April 16, 2019. Lloyd was a graduate of Wilson High School Class of 1959. He attended and graduated from North Carolina A&T State University, played on the Aggie Pride Football Team along with fellow Civil Rights activist Jessie Jackson. In 1965, Lloyd was employed by the Florence CountyCommunity Action Agency as a Director of the Work Programs. Lloyd was an active member of Mt. Zion AME Church in Florence, SC, until his health declined. Lloyd was joined in holy matrimony to Bernice Stokes Smith in 1967 and to this union two sons were born. Survivors include his wife, Bernice; two sons, Lloyd Lorenz (Trey) Smith, III and Elliott Daniel Smith; one daughter-in-law, Erica Canty Smith; three granddaughters, Layla, Rachel, and Gabrielle; three brothers-in-law; two god children; a host of nephews; nieces; cousins; other relatives; friends; and acquaintances. Family visitation will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 20, 2019, one hour prior to the funeral service at Mount Zion AME Church.
